Atolls are ring-shaped coral reefs that encircle a lagoon partially or completely. They are formed from the gradual subsidence of volcanic islands that are surrounded by fringing reefs. Over time, as the volcanic island sinks below the water surface, the coral continues to grow upwards to stay near the ocean's surface, eventually forming a ring-shaped coral reef. This process creates the characteristic lagoon in the center of the atoll.
