Primary succession: This type of succession occurs in an area where no soil is present, such as on bare rock or lava. The process starts with the colonization of pioneer species like lichens and mosses, which gradually break down the rock and create soil for other plants to grow.
Secondary succession: This type of succession occurs in an area that has been disturbed but still has soil intact, such as after a forest fire or abandoned farmland. In secondary succession, the process begins with the growth of fast-growing plants and eventually leads to the reestablishment of a diverse and stable ecosystem.
