Leaves change color in the fall because the decrease in sunlight and cooler temperatures cause the chlorophyll (green pigment) in the leaves to break down. As the chlorophyll disappears, other pigments such as carotenoids (yellow and orange) and anthocyanins (red and purple) become more visible, giving the leaves their vibrant fall colors.
