Leaves change color in the fall due to a decrease in chlorophyll production as the days get shorter and temperatures drop. This reduction in chlorophyll reveals other pigments present in the leaves, such as carotenoids (orange and yellow colors) and anthocyanins (red and purple colors), resulting in the vibrant fall foliage we see.
