During hibernation, animals enter a state of reduced body temperature, metabolism, heart rate, and breathing rate in order to conserve energy during the winter months. They typically find a sheltered spot, such as a burrow or den, to stay warm and safe during this period of dormancy. Hibernating animals may also store extra fat reserves before winter to sustain them while they are inactive.
