During hibernation, animals enter a state of dormancy where their metabolic rate slows down significantly to conserve energy. They typically find a secluded and sheltered spot to nestle into, where they can remain undisturbed. Animals that hibernate store up fat reserves before entering hibernation to sustain them during the winter months when food is scarce. While hibernating, their body temperature drops, their breathing and heart rate slow down, and they do not wake up to eat or drink. Hibernation helps animals survive the harsh winter conditions when food sources are limited.
