Plants use sunlight to produce food through a process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants use the energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into glucose (sugar) and oxygen (O2). This process takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells, where chlorophyll (a pigment that gives plants their green color) absorbs sunlight and initiates the chemical reactions necessary for the production of food. The glucose produced through photosynthesis is then used by the plant as an energy source for growth, reproduction, and other metabolic processes.
