Plants respond to changes in light direction through a process called phototropism. Phototropism is the growth of a plant in response to the direction of light. When light is not coming from directly above the plant, certain plant hormones, such as auxin, help the plant cells elongate on the side furthest from the light source, causing the plant to bend towards the light. This allows the plant to optimize its exposure to sunlight for photosynthesis.
