Cryptobiosis is a biological state in which an organism's metabolic activities come to a reversible standstill, allowing it to survive in extreme environmental conditions that would normally be fatal. Various organisms such as tardigrades, brine shrimp, nematodes, and some types of bacteria are known to be able to enter cryptobiosis and suspend their life processes until conditions become more favorable for survival.
