We know the universe is expanding primarily through observations of galaxies. Astronomers have observed that galaxies are moving away from each other and that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to be moving away. This phenomena, known as Hubble's law, provides strong evidence that the universe is expanding. Additionally, the cosmic microwave background radiation, leftover from the Big Bang, also supports the idea of an expanding universe.
