In a league format, a team earns points based on the outcome of each game they play. Typically, a team earns:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw or tie
  • 0 points for a loss

These points are accumulated throughout the season, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points is usually declared the winner of the league.

There are a few ways that teams can earn points in a league formatĀ

- In a two-competitor game where ties are rare or impossible, competitors are ranked by number of wins, with ties counting half.

- If draws are more common, the award may be 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw.

- If there are more than two competitors per match, points may be ordinal, like 3 for first, 2 for second, 1 for third.

- In rugby union, bonus points may be awarded for scoring a certain number of tries in a match, usually four, or for losing by a relatively small margin, usually 7 or less.

- In association football, where draws are relatively common, many leagues give 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
