A soft fork is a type of update to a blockchain protocol that is backward-compatible, meaning it does not require all nodes on the network to upgrade to the new rules. This allows the updated nodes to still communicate with the non-updated nodes, as the new rules are a stricter subset of the old rules. Soft forks are considered less disruptive than hard forks, which do require all nodes to upgrade in order to stay on the same network.

A soft fork is a change to the protocol of a blockchain that makes previously invalid blocks or transactions valid, but does not make previously valid blocks or transactions invalid. This generally requires only a majority of the network's hash power to upgrade, as opposed to a hard fork which requires all nodes to upgrade.
