Internal Seed Dispersal:
Seed Predators, Not Destroyers: Some insects, like beetles and weevils, feed on seeds. However, they may not consume the entire seed. If they leave a portion of the seed intact, it can germinate later, potentially in a new location.
Mutualistic Relationships: Certain plants have evolved mutually beneficial relationships with ants. These plants produce fleshy structures called elaiosomes that are attractive to ants. The ants carry the seeds containing the elaiosomes back to their nests, where they eat the elaiosome and discard the seed. This dispersal benefits both the plant (seed dispersal) and the ant (nutritious food).
Examples of Insect Seed Dispersal:
Burying Beetles: These beetles bury seeds for later consumption. However, they may not always retrieve all the buried seeds, allowing some to germinate.
Flies and Carrion Beetles: These insects are attracted to the odors of ripe fruits. As they feed on the fruit, they might come into contact with seeds and disperse them.
Ants: Many ant species are important seed dispersers, particularly for plants with elaiosomes. Their extensive underground networks can also facilitate seed dispersal.
