Molting in birds is the process of shedding old feathers to make way for new feathers. Feathers are made of keratin, the same protein that makes up hair and nails in humans. Unlike hair and nails, feathers cannot repair themselves once they become worn or damaged. As a result, birds need to molt regularly to maintain their plumage in top condition.
