Why do hamsters hibernate?

Hamsters do not actually hibernate. In the wild, they may enter a state that looks like hibernation called torpor, which is a period of inactivity to conserve energy in response to extreme cold or food scarcity. However, pet hamsters kept in a warm and well-fed environment do not hibernate.
