Cats knead blankets as a comforting behavior leftover from kittenhood. When kittens nurse from their mother, they knead her to stimulate milk flow. As adult cats, kneading can be a way to show contentment, mark their territory with scent glands in their paw pads, or simply as a way to relax and feel secure.
