What makes the chameleon change its color?

Chameleons change color mainly for camouflage, to regulate their body temperature, and to communicate with other chameleons. They have special cells called chromatophores in their skin that contain different pigments. By expanding or contracting these cells, chameleons can change the color of their skin.
