The domestic dog, scientifically known as Canis lupus familiaris, is believed to have descended from the gray wolf (Canis lupus) over 15,000 years ago. This process of domestication is thought to have occurred as wolves began to associate with humans for food and protection, eventually leading to the development of the diverse breeds of domestic dogs we have today.
