Octopuses change color through a process called chromatophores. Chromatophores are specialized cells in the skin of octopuses that contain pigments. When the octopus wants to change its color, these cells expand or contract, allowing the pigments to be more or less visible, thus creating different patterns and colors on the skin. This ability to change color is used by octopuses for camouflage, communication, and to deter predators.
