Spiders produce silk using specialized glands in their abdomen called spinnerets. The silk is a liquid protein solution that hardens as it is pulled out of the spinnerets. Spiders then manipulate the silk threads using their legs to create intricate webs for various purposes such as catching prey, building shelters, or mating.
