The process of digestion involves the breakdown of food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. It begins in the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva to start the process of mechanical and chemical digestion. The food then travels down the esophagus to the stomach, where it is further broken down by stomach acid and enzymes.

Next, the partially digested food moves to the small intestine, where enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver further break down the food into nutrients that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The nutrients are then absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream and transported to the cells in the body for energy and other functions.

Any undigested food and waste products then move to the large intestine, where water is absorbed and the remaining waste is formed into feces. The feces are then eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus. This entire process is essential for providing the body with the nutrients it needs to function properly.
