Thunder and lightning are caused by the rapid expansion of air surrounding a lightning bolt. When a lightning bolt travels through the air, it heats the air to around 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit (10,000 degrees Celsius), causing it to rapidly expand and create a shock wave that we hear as thunder. Lightning is essentially a large electrical discharge between the negatively charged base of a cloud and the positively charged ground or between two clouds.
