Plants prevent water loss through a process called transpiration. They have specialized structures called stomata on their leaves that regulate the movement of gases in and out of the plant. The stomata open to allow carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis, but they can also lead to water loss through transpiration. To prevent excessive water loss, plants can close their stomata during hot and dry conditions. Additionally, plants have a waxy outer layer called the cuticle on their leaves and stems, which helps to reduce water loss through evaporation.
