Eels reproduce through a process called spawning. Adult eels migrate to the ocean to spawn, where females release eggs and males release sperm into the water. The fertilized eggs hatch into larvae called leptocephali, which then drift with the ocean currents until they reach suitable habitats to grow into young eels.
