The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are caused by the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field. When charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field, they create a stunning display of light in the sky near the polar regions. The different colors in the Northern Lights depend on the type of gas particles in the Earth's atmosphere that the solar wind interacts with.
