The smallest mammal in the world is the bumblebee bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai). It weighs just barely 2 grams and measures 1 to 1.3 inches in length, which is about the size of a large bumblebee. Discovered by Thai zoologist Kitti Thonglongya in 1974, it’s also known as Kitti’s hog-nosed bat due to its pink, pig-like snout. Quite remarkable, isn’t it?
Additionally, if you’re curious about the smallest non-flying mammal, that title goes to Savi’s white-toothed pygmy shrew (also called the Etruscan shrew). It has a head and body length of 35-48 mm (1.3-1.8 inches), a tail length of 25-30 mm (0.98-1.17 inches), and weighs 1.5-2.5 g (0.05-0.09 oz). These tiny creatures truly defy expectations!
