Light Yagami discovers the Death Note's abilities when he first encounters the shinigami Ryuk, the Death God, who drops the Death Note into the human world. Ryuk explains to Light that if a person's name is written in the Death Note while the writer has the person's face in mind, that person will die. This revelation sets off the chain of events in the series "Death Note."
