Ryuk is a Shinigami, a god of death, who drops his Death Note into the human world, where it is found by Light Yagami. This event is what connects Ryuk and Light Yagami in the story of "Death Note." Ryuk remains with Light as he uses the Death Note to bring about his vision of justice and becomes a central character in the series.
