Fireflies produce light through a process called bioluminescence. Inside their bodies, they have special cells called photocytes that contain a chemical called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. When these chemicals react with oxygen, it produces light without creating heat, allowing fireflies to produce their characteristic glow.

Fireflies produce light through a process called bioluminescence. Inside their bodies, they have a special organ that contains a chemical called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. When oxygen enters this organ, it reacts with the luciferin and luciferase to produce light without creating heat, which is how fireflies are able to glow.
