Indiana, being a state within the United States, does not have an official national poet. However, there have been many poets associated with Indiana who have contributed to its literary heritage. One notable poet with ties to Indiana is James Whitcomb Riley (1849–1916), often referred to as the "Hoosier Poet." Riley gained national fame for his dialect poetry, which celebrated the rural life and characters of the American Midwest, including Indiana. His works, such as "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man," are still celebrated for their charm, humor, and insight into everyday life in Indiana during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While Riley is not officially designated as the national poet of Indiana, he remains an important figure in the state's literary history.
