Geckos are able to climb smooth surfaces due to the unique structure of their feet. They have specialized toe pads that contain microscopic hair-like structures called setae, which create a strong attraction force known as van der Waals force. This allows geckos to stick to surfaces by taking advantage of intermolecular forces between molecules on their toe pads and the surface they are climbing on.
