Hermit crabs find new shells by actively seeking out shells that are suitable for their size. They will sniff and explore various shells they come across on the ocean floor or shore until they find one that fits well and offers them protection. When a hermit crab finds a suitable shell, they will quickly move into it to make it their new home.
