Horses can sleep both standing up and lying down. They have a unique system of "stay apparatus" in their legs that allows them to lock their knees and doze off while standing. When horses lie down to sleep, they usually do so for short periods of time to enter a deeper sleep stage. Horses need about 2-3 hours of deep sleep per day to function properly.
