Snakes shed their skin through a process called ecdysis or molting. Snakes grow continuously throughout their lives and their skin does not grow with them, so they shed their old skin to make way for new growth. Before shedding, snakes develop a new layer of skin underneath the old one. They then rub against rough surfaces to help loosen the old skin, before eventually slithering out of it completely. This process typically takes a few days to complete.
