Volcanic pumice is formed during explosive volcanic eruptions when frothy lava cools rapidly and traps gas bubbles inside. The rapid cooling solidifies the lava into a lightweight, porous rock known as pumice.

Volcanic pumice is formed when molten rock (lava) containing high levels of gas is violently ejected from a volcano during an explosive eruption. The rapid cooling of this lava results in the formation of a frothy, lightweight volcanic rock known as pumice. The gas bubbles trapped within the lava as it solidifies give pumice its porous and lightweight qualities.
