Volcanic bombs are formed during explosive volcanic eruptions when lava is ejected into the air. The lava is often semi-liquid and can contain gas bubbles. As the lava is thrown into the air, the gas bubbles expand, causing the lava to stretch and take on an elongated shape. As the lava cools in the air, it solidifies to form volcanic bombs of various shapes and sizes.
