Litecoin was created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee and was released on October 7, 2011, as an open-source project on GitHub. It is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that was designed to be quicker and cheaper to use than Bitcoin. The Litecoin network went live on October 13, 2011. It is often referred to as the "silver to Bitcoin's gold" and has been one of the longest-standing cryptocurrencies in the market.
