In American football, a team typically has four downs to advance the ball 10 yards or more in order to achieve a first down. If the team is successful in advancing the ball for 10 yards or more within those four downs, they are awarded a new set of four downs to continue their offensive possession. If they fail to reach the required yardage within the four downs, possession of the ball is turned over to the opposing team.
