The Premier League, the top professional football league in England, was founded in the year 1992. Prior to that, the highest division of English football was known as the Football League First Division. However, in 1992, the top clubs in the Football League First Division decided to break away and form their own league, which came to be known as the Premier League. Since its establishment, the Premier League has become one of the most prominent and competitive football leagues in the world.
