Cardano was founded by Charles Hoskinson, who is also one of the co-founders of Ethereum. The project was developed by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), a blockchain research and development company. The initial funding for Cardano came from a token sale conducted in 2017, where investors from all over the world participated in purchasing ADA, the native cryptocurrency of the Cardano platform.
