Cricket made its sole appearance at the Olympic Games during the Paris 1900 event. In that historic match, only two countries competed: Great Britain and hosts France. The French team was mostly represented by English expatriates, while the English team was represented by the Devon and Somerset Wanderers Cricket Club. The match was played over two days with 12 players on each side, and Great Britain emerged victorious, winning by 158 runs to claim the gold medal. If the French team had held out for just five more minutes, the game would have been declared a draw. The knowledge of this game would have been lost if not for the foresight of John Symes, a member of the victorious team, who kept a scorecard in his own writing. Cricket was originally scheduled to be included in the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, but due to insufficient entries, the tournament was canceled. Although cricket has not been part of subsequent Olympic programs, it is set to make a comeback at the Los Angeles 2028 Games after a gap of 128 years.
