A cow has four compartments in its stomach, not four separate stomachs as is frequently erroneously accepted. These compartments are the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and stomach. Each compartment takes on a particular part in the assimilation cycle of the cow, allowing it to effectively process its plant-based diet.
