Some animals become torpid when in danger as a defense mechanism to escape predators. Torpidity is a state of decreased physiological activity that allows the animal to conserve energy and reduce its chances of being detected by predators. By appearing motionless or inactive, the animal may be able to avoid attracting attention and increase its chances of survival.
